It has almost nothing to do with your website. In fact, this traffic hack relies completely on social media. Can you guess what it is? It’s use Instagram Stories. Instagram is still huge, with over 2 billion, not million, billion, monthly active users, and 59% of them who log in every day. So what should you be promoting on your Instagram Story in order to drive more traffic? One, I want you to promote a product. 36% of the Stories promote a product. It works. Now with this product, when you’re doing a Story, just don’t say, “Hey, here’s your product, swipe up to buy it.” You can have multiple Stories talking about the benefit of the product and how great it is, in essence, you’re making your pitch on Instagram, and then they swipe up to go to the the landing page. You don’t want them to have to go to the landing page to learn more about the product, you want them to learn about the product through the Story so that way you’re drop-off rate isn’t as big, so then when they swipe up, all they have to do is just complete the purchase.Number two, broadcast live events. Show off what you’ve been working on or something new that you’re about to release. 10% of brand Stories feature various live events. When you end up doing that, people get excited, it builds anticipation, and you end up generating more sales. Have you noticed there’s a company that everyone knows that’s really good at this? It’s called Apple. Apple does big product launches, they have live events, and they build up that anticipation. Stories can help you do that as well.Three, explainer videos. Users love tutorials. 5% of businesses use Instagram Stories for how-to videos. And these how-to videos help you build a bond with your audience, then they can swipe up, go to your website, read the rest of the blog post or watch the rest of the video, and that will help to drive you way more traffic. And we found it super effective for people to start becoming more loyal to your blog, becoming a reader, subscribing to it through email, or by just following you on any of the social networks out there.Four, new blog posts. If you’re blogging, you can’t just post on your website and hope for the best. Promote the heck out of it. I share my content on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, any social network out there, and I’ll even put in a new Story, “Check out this blog post, swipe up to read it,” and I’ll put something that’s catchy in the Story. So I may talk about, “Google’s about to release a new update. Swipe up to learn what it is and how to be prepared for it.” That’ll cause a lot of people to come to my website and learn more.Five, contests or sweepstakes. Want to really keep your audience engaged? Show off how they can win something exciting. Maybe a consultation, a free trial, or something exciting that you’re willing to give. Sweepstakes, giveaways, they’ve worked for ages, keep using them. That’s why when you go to a mall, you still see those giveaways of free cars. Or even you go to casino, they have all these giveaways. Why do they do that? Because it works.Six, user generated content. Look, UGC, or user generated content, is huge. 93% of marketers agree that content created by consumers perform better than branded content. For example, if you’re selling a product, and someone else has a video of them opening up and reviewing how amazing it is, put it in your Story. It’ll create more trust and more sales. The number might shock you. Although you typically only hear about a few major ones every year, the real number is way higher. Can you guess what it is? Well in 2020, Google made 4,500 changes to its search algorithm. Here’s a great way to stay ahead of Google’s next big algorithm update.The strategy, includes ongoing optimization into your content plan. Look, you probably already know that Google heavily factors in user experience when it comes to search rankings, but if you’re not actively updating your content on a consistent basis, you’re putting your entire website at a disadvantage for when the next update comes around. So here’s what I want you to do.Step one, go into Google Search Console. And what I want you to do is click on your site portfolio, look at your traffic, and compare year over year. You can actually compare the last 30 days to what happened in the previous year. And you can do that using their date picker. I want you to see all the pages that have decreased the most in traffic, and I want you to update those pages. Have you noticed that anytime you do a Google search, Wikipedia is continually ranking at the top? Why is that? It’s because their content is continually fresh with things like GPT-3 and all these AI tools that just make you being able to write content at the snap of your fingers, it’s easy to produce content. Everyone’s doing it. We need people to continually update their content more frequently. And when Google sees that you’re updating your content more frequently, they know it’s fresh, not outdated, that’s more likely to provide the most value to users. Now the way I recommended you to update your content is you look at the pages that decrease in their traffic the most. Those are the pages that can provide your biggest traffic gains. Because those have the most opportunity. If they lost rankings, it’s usually because they’re not as fresh as the competition or more thorough or more in depth. And you can see what keywords those pages rank for ’cause Google Search Console shows you and you can just do Google searches for those keywords to see what other people are doing that you’re not, and that’ll give you ideas on how to keep your page the most user friendly, up to date, and providing the most value.Now, the second thing I want you to do is, on a monthly basis, keep track of all your main money pages. These are the pages that are getting most the traffic to your website from Google. And I want you to keep track of, all right, here are the main pages, just spend a quick few minutes on the top 30, 40, 50 pages, shouldn’t take you more than a few hours a month and create a list of the ones that you think should be updated to provide people the most value.Even if that means that, hey, your traffic isn’t dropping. Just because your traffic isn’t dropping doesn’t mean that page shouldn’t be updated. You want to do what’s best for the user and not focus too much on Google. That’s how you stay ahead of their update. because what does Google do? You think Google cares about how many backlinks you have, or how cool your site looks? Sure these are all factors in their algorithm.What they really care for is what a user likes and what they don’t. Because even if you had a million backlinks, if users go to your website and they all bounce and click the back button ’cause they think your content sucks, Google’s not going to rank you high. Yes, there are all these SEO factors, but what they care the most about is, is the user satisfied and happy when they land on your website? If they are, over time, you rank higher. Simply put, if you know what your audience is struggling with and what they want, you can market to them in a way more effective way. Don’t create a one-size-fits-all targeting or even retargeting strategy. You need to leverage the information you have about your users, how they interacted with your brand and what they actually stand to gain from further engaging with you. Here are some ways you can segment your audience the right way.Tip number one, become a storyteller. Think of all your messaging as something in a sequence, not a single interaction. Create ads that follow each other in a linear fashion and create alternative pathways depending on a user’s response. I’ll create a generic email and then split that up into two follow-ups depending on how that user interacted with the first email. They’ve already done the segmenting work for me.Tip two, build better buyer personas. According to HubSpot, using effective marketing personas made websites two to five times more effective, so why not? If you just Google marketing personas or user personas, you can get a lot for free. There are so many templates out there.Tip three, leverage social media tools. Facebook allows businesses to target and message based on user info such as likes, demographics, interests, and even location. LinkedIn allows advertisers to filter and segment by industry, company size, and even more. And when you segment and you do this, what you’ll find is you’ll get a higher ROI from your marketing and you’ll appeal to the right people so you won’t waste your salespeople’s time or your customer service people’s time and things just work out much better for you in the long run from a cost and ROI perspective. To four, improve your cross-channel presence.Want to reach younger audiences? 43% of TikTok’s global audience is between 18 and 24. Want to reach an older demo? 27.5 of Instagram users were between 25 and 34. Look, segmenting is the way to go and what you’ll find is when you segment you’re going to be like, Neil, this takes a lot of time to create customized copy for each of these segments. Don’t focus too much on the copy, focus more so on what you show people depending on the journey that they’re taking and people segment themselves. People segment by being a buyer or a non-buyer or opening up an email, or not opening up an email or clicking a link or not clicking a link. If you catch my drift based on people’s actions, you can then segment them. It is not that hard but it takes a little bit of work to set these up. And whatever marketing automation tool you’re using whatever advertising platforms you’re using, whatever CMS you’re using, most of them have features that allow you to easily segment. It’s short, it’s simple, but I know my buddy John will open it.Step three, segment your audience. When you segment your email list, you can do things like, buyers versus non-buyers, people who have added things to their cart, but have not completed. We found that, when you segment, you generate more revenue, versus non-segmenting. For example, if you’re already a repeat buyer, and you’re on my email list, why would I send you the same email I would send someone who hasn’t ever made a purchase? You’d be like, I already bought that. Why are you sending me an email on that? That’s why segmenting is really important.Step four, test, test, and test some more. Test out copy. Test out your design and button variations. More than 50% of markers use A/B testing to boost conversions. So if you think that social media marketing isn’t important, you’re dead wrong. It really does help. What I want you to do is first off, go on all the major social platforms that your ideal customers on, whether that’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, all the main ones.Two, I want you to post at least one time a day. And yes, you can repurpose the content they use for one social network for others. You may have to adjust it here and there, but that’s what I want you to start off with.Three, when people leave a comment on your social profiles, I want you to respond to ’em, engage with them and take care of ’em. By taking care of people, it creates amazing word-of-mouth marketing and it creates a lot of brand evangelists.Four, look to see what content that you’re posting resonates and what content doesn’t. Post more of this stuff that’s working for audience and less of this stuff that’s not working.And five, last but not least, what I really really want you to do is go look at Facebook’s ad library. Now, there are tons of big no-nos when it comes to SEO. The more obvious red flags that can actually get you penalized include things like keyword stuffing, using a ton of duplicate content, buying backlinks, and things like that. But there’s one major issue I see a ton of newbies make and it’s probably not the one you think, of because when people think of SEO, they think of keywords, backlinks, meta descriptions, and things like that. The thing I see that people look over all the time that’s killing their SEO strategy is not optimizing their UX. See, search engines don’t just evaluate webpages based on the keywords you use or how many backlinks you have. Tip number one, optimize your page speed. 88.5% of visitors leave a website because of slow load time. Just imagine, you pick up your phone, you go to do a Google search, you click on a result, one second, two seconds, three seconds, still not loaded, four seconds, five seconds, six seconds, halfway loaded, seven seconds, eight seconds, nine seconds, fully loaded. That’s a long time. You’re going to leave the site. Make sure your code is clean using a CDN, which is a content delivery network, so that way your website is on servers all over the web. Tip number two, optimize your images and content. Updating and republishing old blog posts with new content and images can increase traffic by as much as 106%. According to HTTP Archive, images make up an average of 21% of a total webpage’s weight, so make sure that you’re compressing the images, not in size, I’m talking about file size, so not in dimensions, but more so file sizes of where you want to compress ’em, and when you update your content, optimize your images, make sure that they’re images on what people are looking for, you’re going to be much better off.Tip number three, make sure your headlines are perfect. 36% of SEO experts said that the headlines were the most important SEO element. David Ogilvy always used to say, “80 cents on the dollar spent on the headline.” So you got to make sure that your headline is amazing, and there’s a lot of stats out there that show this. Eight out of 10 people read a headline, two out of 10 people read the rest of your content. So you got to really focus on the headline and make it catchy. What I like doing is running A/B tests using paid ads with different headlines to figure out what people like the most.Tip number four, simplify your website’s navigation. 84.6% of web designers believe that crowded web design is the most common mistake made by small businesses, and look, simplify your navigation, simplify what’s on a page, remove unnecessary elements, it just makes things easier for people to navigate. If you’re not sure if you’re making things simpler or worse, you can always use analytics tools like Crazy Egg which shows you where people click. You can also survey ’em, and on top of that, if you want to do a lot of user testing, check out usertesting.com which can also give you more feedback.Tip number five, improve your mobile experience. Google recently reported that 60% of searches are completed on your phone. That’s a lot. How’s your mobile experience? Is it amazing, is it bad? Majority of the people that visit your website eventually, if not already, will be from mobile devices. Look at a lot of social networks that you use, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok. Where do you find them? Mobile devices. It’s super important that you optimize your site to be responsive so that way your website can expand if someone has a big desktop computer, a laptop, an iPad, a small mobile phone, or a big mobile phone, a responsive design adapts so that way it fits all these devices. Sure, I may have gotten some likes or impressions but those things really didn’t help my business grow. So, what do I do after a post like that? I go to the numbers.So metric number one, reach. Reach is the number of people who see your content. It’s always important to ask yourself two main questions with this one, whether or not you’re reaching enough people. If you’re reaching enough people why aren’t they converting? Pay attention to an important subset of your reach. If you’re targeting the wrong type of people you may want to adjust your content, look to see what some of your competitors do so that way you can target the right people and generate more sales.Metric two, impressions. Meta saw impressions grow 10% in 2021. But when you think about this, if these social networks are seeing their percentages grow, your percentages should also grow. But on the flip side, if their percentages are decreasing and yours are decreasing, you’re like, wait, I’m not getting as many impressions. What am I doing wrong? Well, let’s say a social platform’s, you know, impressions decrease by 20%, but your impressions maintain flat. That means you’re doing something right. If they’re actually gaining users, you would be doing better, but that’s why tracking impressions is super important. Metric three, engagement rate. The easiest way to figure out how you’re doing on all the social networks is go look at your competition, see their engagement rate with how many likes and comments they’re getting per post based on how many followers they have. If you’re doing better than your competition, you’re doing good. Metric four, amplification rate. The ratio of shares per post to the overall number of followers. So, you want to really look at this because you can see what kind of content is helping you and which content isn’t really getting you the amplification that you’re looking for. You want to create more of the content that is getting you the amplification and less of the content that isn’t getting you much of it. Metric five, virality rate. Similar to amplification in that it measures how much your content is shared, but virality rate calculates share as a percentage of the impressions rather than as an impression of followers. Metric six, audience growth rate. How many new followers are you getting on social media over a certain period of time as a percentage of your total audience? Here’s a tip for you. If you want to grow your audience fast, get on TikTok. It’s the fastest growing social network with 105% user growth in the US over the last couple years. Metric seven, social referrals. According to HubSpot, consumers are 71% more likely to make a purchase based on social referrals. Now, social referrals are huge because it’s other people vouching for you saying your product or your service is good. Think of it as a version of review or a rating on Amazon. That’s the same concept with let’s say, social referrals. Now, a bonus metric for you and this is the most important one which is why I really want to save it for last and this would technically be number eight, is ROI. What is your ROI on social media? What posts are getting you the most return versus which posts are generating very little to nothing? And you can track this in Google Analytics. You can set up goal and conversion tracking. Also, when someone completes a lead form or a purchase or buys a service from your signs up you can also survey them and ask them how they find you and where they signed up from. We all know that blogging is important, but so few blogs actually drive traffic, let alone lead to conversions. Why? There are tons of reasons, but it can be especially frustrating if you follow Google’s exact device, right? Here’s some of the reasons why your blog might not be generating enough traffic.Reason one. You’re not incorporating images into your content. According to Jeff Bullas, “Articles with images get 95% more total views than articles without images. And if you want to take it one step further, consider using infographics as well. Infographics tell a whole story. It makes a lot of you know, rich data type of content, easy to understand and digest in a visual format.Reason number two. You’re not linking correctly. Long-form content gets an average of 77% more links than short articles. But here’s the thing. The way Google crawls your website is by links. When other people link to you, they bind your website, and they start indexing. The more links you have, the more valuable your site is, but your links internally within your website is how Google also crawls your whole website, and figures out what articles are related to each other and which ones, should they rank higher. So if I have an article on let’s say, digital marketing and I’m talking about different strategies in digital marketing, such as social media marketing or SEO or paid advertising on Facebook, I would link to the respected article. So for example, when I talk about social media marketing, I may link to an article on the beginner’s guide to social media marketing. When I’m talking about SEO within that digital marketing article, I may link to let’s say, a guide on how to get started with SEO, and so forth and so on. That will help your overall site get more traffic and rank higher in Google.Reason three. You’re not leveraging topic clusters. Former product marketer at Buffer offered Lua built topic clusters around Instagram and marketing by interlinking articles related to the same topic. And in six months, weekly organic traffic went up by 48%. From 27,000 visitors to 40,000. That’s a massive increase. So consider doing clusters. You can also see this on Moz. They talk about the beginner’s guide to SEO, and they’ll have all these articles that they’ll link to that are more detailed when it comes to around SEO.Reason four. Your meta descriptions aren’t optimized. Title tags between 15 and 40 characters have a 8.6% higher click-through rate than lengthier ones. So make sure your title tags are short and to the point. Also, consider leveraging emotions within your title tags or even evoking curiosity. So for example of evoking curiosity is, the seven benefits of green tea. Number five will shock you. Whoa, what’s number five? It’s going to shock me. That’s an example of evoking curiosity, and with emotions if your titles or descriptions make people feel happy or sad or loved, those are all ways to get more clicks.Reason five, you’re not promoting nearly enough on social. Think your blog strategy starts and ends with your actual blog? Think again. 73% of marketers believe that social media has been very effective for their business, and it’s one of the best ways to promote your blog. Future proofing your SEO strategy is absolutely essential because updates happen all the time. Heck, since 2018, there have been roughly three Google core updates each and every single year. And here’s even a crazier number. There’s roughly 4,500 times that Google changes their algorithm each and every single year according to Search Engine Land. Now, most of these changes aren’t major ones so you’re not going to notice them. But still, that’s a lot of time that goes into adjusting and tweaking Google’s algorithm. And some of these changes are so teeny tiny that your traffic just goes up a little bit or down a little bit and you don’t really need to worry about those. But every once in a while, you’re going to have a major update that drastically changes your traffic, and those are the ones that you need to future proof yourself from. So how can you future proof your SEO so that way you can stay ahead of Google’s next update? Well leave a comment below guessing what it might be. I’ll give you a hint. Focus on user experience. Think about it. Every Google update has essentially the same overall goal, make the algorithm more reflective of human behavior. So think about what is best for people, not what’s best for Google. That way the pages that users are actually searching for and spending time on are the ones that tend to do the best. Google doesn’t care if you have a million backlinks versus 5 million backlinks or a hundred thousand. Think about it, whenever you do a search, are you like, hmm, this result is number one and it should be because it has a million backlinks. You don’t care about that as a user, you just care about the user experience. Are you getting what you’re looking for? So there’s a few ways you can prioritize your user experience and give users what they’re looking for. Now, when Google has an update, sometimes even if you do all this stuff, sometimes you lose and you get less traffic. That’s okay. You’re not optimizing for the short run, you’re optimizing for the long run. Cause a lot of times what happens is Google will make changes and realize, wait, this actually wasn’t the best change for the user. Let me go actually make this other change. And over time, if you do what’s best for the end user, you’ll find that you’ll continually grow your traffic over time. That’s the key with future proofing your website for SEO.
