Even as a child, I’ve always seemed to have some unique insight into other people. I found that a bit confusing why other people, especially grownups, did not understand what was so obvious. Still, I liked helping others – giving them insight, comfort, and encouragement. In some ways, I was precocious, in other ways, clueless. Curiosity about people and what made them tick has been my thing from the beginning and still is. I am very curious about people (individuals) and want to know more. So, I ask questions. The result is, I understand them better and, as it turns out, they seem to understand themselves better. After we talk, they have greater clarity in their minds and are more motivated to act decisively. I guess that is a lot of what coaching is.
Since getting into the coaching and training business over 25 years ago, I find each encounter with each client fascinating and challenging. I ask myself, what do they want, really want, and how can I help them become that person who leaves their Comfort Zone and goes and gets it?
Leaders fascinate me, what they do and how they do what they do. They can be complicated in how they work and, other times, surprisingly simple in their motivations and outlooks. Getting each leader to that place of their highest performance and the deepest satisfaction for themselves and the people they lead is highly challenging and deeply rewarding. It brings forth the best wins for everyone.
