Downtown Lynchburg Association recognized for cookbook [Video]

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) has been honored by the International Downtown Association with the distinguished Downtown Achievement Award of Excellence for DLA’s “Hill City Eats” cookbook, originally published in 2022.

The Award of Excellence acknowledges an excellent response to an urban place management challenge, demonstrating application of industry knowledge and exceeds the jury criteria, according to a news release.

A jury of peer professionals reviewed, deliberated and evaluated all entries in the 2023 Downtown Achievement Awards. DLA’s project stood out among the submissions, one of only 12 selected for the prestigious award in all of North America, the release states.

“Hill City Eats” was entered in the category of Marketing, Communications and Events, which IDA identifies as one of the seven professional urban place management practice areas. This category features unique organizational approaches and projects in the areas of branding, public relations, marketing strategies and communications plans, the release states.

Kristen Wells-Collins Garland Journal [Video]

Kristen Wells-Collins is the founder and lead chemist of Black to the Lab, a STEM company created in 2020 to inspire Black girls to pursue cosmetic chemistry. Her first product, the Cosmetic Chemistry Activity Set, allows young girls to create beauty products while learning about science. Kristen, a Prairie View A&M University alum, was motivated by the lack of representation in the industry, where only 4.4% of chemists are Black. Her company also offers workshops teaching branding and marketing. Kristen envisions expanding her curriculum and providing girls with opportunities to showcase their work in the cosmetic industry.
