West Side Scholars Academy is hosting its new summer camp centered on social justice at Central High School in Tuscaloosa.
The six-week program, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., will help educate middle-school students on Black history and social justice, two of the academy’s main tenants.
“The West Side Scholars are going to be transformative — they are going to be able to go and do whatever they want to do. Whether that’s continuing on to college, going to the military or starting a business, we don’t want them to think that there is a limit to what they can do,” said Andrea Wagner, the academy’s curriculum coordinator.
She added that it is important for students to understand social justice from a variety of perspectives, including the past, present and future.
