Las Vegas event connects Latina moms to financial resources [Video]

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As the cost of living continues to climb, many families are struggling to keep up.

In Latino households, mothers are often the ones carrying that weight.

“They’re the pillars in our community. They’re holding it down, making those hard financial decisions,” said Nevada program manager of Somos Votantes, Angel Lazcano.

At the Querida Madre community event Wednesday, Latina moms connected to resources that many say they’ve never had access to. This includes business programs and licensing help through the Las Vegas Business Incubator.

“If they’re interested in starting a business, I’ve heard time and time again, it’s hard maneuvering that process for upcoming entrepreneurs or first generation that don’t have connections to resources,” Lazcano said.

Lazcano explained they’re responding directly to concerns heard across Latino neighborhoods in Las Vegas.

“Our latest polls show that 67% of Latinos feel like the economy in general is not doing that well off. …

PCI students launch businesses and give back to community - PortageOnline.com [Video]

Students in the applied commerce program at Portage Collegiate Institute showcased their business ventures last week after a semester of hard work. The event featured student-run companies offering everything from custom apparel and cleaning services to marketing strategies and community-focused food programs. Gavin Taylor, who teaches applied commerce at PCI, says the event gives students a real taste of entrepreneurship. Weve got some students selling lip gloss, bracelets, snacks, social media marketing services, house cleaning, clothing, lots of variety, notes Taylor. Each visitor acts as a judge, receiving ten $1,000 PCI Bucks to invest in their favourite student businesses.
