Zero to one by Peter Thiel is a crisp, rational book focuses on mechanics of startups combined with Thiel’s own theories, philosophies and line of thought. Peter Thiel (the author) is the founder of PayPal and Palantir and this book has received tremendous response across the globe.
One recurrent feature that you can’t help but notice in the book is author’s firmness while presenting his thoughts and theories, to the extent of sounding extremely judgmental . He boldly claims that Cleantech companies’ business models were farce, Bill Gates is no more an innovator but just a philanthropist no one with a right frame of mind will dress up like Lady Gaga!
Thiel uses recent history to persuasively argue that the world (and especially the USA) is stuck in a cycle of n-1 to n thinking which is based on its particular outlook on the future. He divides the world’s attitudes toward the future into four categories, along two axes — indeterminate vs. determinate, and optimism vs. pessimism. A determinate outlook says that we can affect how the future turns out, while an indeterminate outlook says that things are more or less left to fate. You can be either optimistic or pessimistic about either of those views. America, Thiel says, has since the 1980s been stuck in a malaise of indeterminate optimism -we still feel that the future will be better than the present, but we have no idea how it’s going to happen.
The author has also dedicated a full chapter on Artificial Intelligence just to convince the readers that AI will only complement humans and won’t replace them!
Those who already have a startup or are looking to start one might get some good takeaways from this book. For others, its just another collection of a successful person’s line of thoughts with various anecdotes, stories and experiments thrown in to support the author’s claims. An insightful, enriching book nevertheless.
