How to Start a Business as a TEENAGER | Young Entrepreneur | Make Money in High School

Good morning and Happy Friday my friends. My name is Hunter Boyd and I am a South Florida real estate agent with a passion for finance, investing, and entrepreneurship. Today we will be talking about my favorite business to start in high school, college, or beyond that requires no start-up money and there is no ceiling to how much you can grow this specific endeavor. Without further ado, let’s get this ball rolling.

It’s 2022, you’re scrolling through Instagram and YouTube seeing everyone seemingly make billions of dollars online in various ways, and you want a fat slice of that pie. Look no further, I have the perfect business to get you off the ground and potentially lead you to make those billions. My personal favorite business to start in this specific situation is an SMMA (Social Media Marketing Agency). What is an SMMA you ask? An SMMA is a company that seeks to provide top level marketing service to companies all over the world, and you can start one right now, but first we need to analyze what exactly an SMMA does. In a basic sense, an SMMA would provide social media content, automization, and advertisements to local businesses from the start, which may include building a website. I started a marketing agency when I was 15 years old in my hometown of Melbourne, Florida. I began by riding my bike down to the main road and walking into an Art Gallery, asking if they needed a website. Little did they know, I had no money and no idea how to build a website, but I can learn. I walked out with a $500 check and a contract to have a website done by the end of the week, so I got to work. I got the website done and naturally started getting referrals from my clients, friends, and family members. I got to the point where websites weren’t enough, my clients wanted more, so I turned myself into a full-fledged Social Media Marketing Agency. My list of services included Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Websites, Photography, Videography, and advertisement services on all major platforms, and I had a client list longer than I could handle. Breaking this growth into several steps, let’s see how you can do the same thing.

Step one of starting your SMMA would be to pick a niche that you can learn easily, for example, website construction. You take this newfound skill and market yourself to local businesses in the area who you think you’ll be able to help. Remember, you’re going into every interaction with a business owner seeking to provide value and take their business to the next level. If you can do that, you’ll always get paid top dollar because the business is making more, so you make more. After you have developed four or five websites and have a few clients paying you monthly, it’s now time to expand your menu. At this point you probably have clients asking if you do Instagram or Facebook in addition to the website services, so take the opportunity to grow and expand your business. All of these skills businesses need in the media world are simple to learn if you spend the time needed to develop the skills, and this is where you can take your SMMA to the next level if you’d like to. I was in high school when I started my company, and I was planning on a different career afterward, so I didn’t hire employees or grow like I could have, however, if you have social media clients and website clients, it would be a good idea to hire a photographer or someone who can handle the back-end time consuming work, so you can spend more time selling to new clients and strategizing with current clients. If done properly, you can easily maintain a client list of about 10-15 monthly clients without any employees and make upwards of $100k per year. All it takes is learning one skill and the tenacity to prospect to local businesses until you get a yes!

If you’d like me to go more in depth on the details of each step, please leave a comment below and I’ll turn the SMMA business growth into a series. Who knows, maybe I’ll start another one just so we can experiment and see how the cards will unfold.
