If there was one piece of advice I would give to people with a preserving instinctual bias it would be to remember that your work doesn’t speak for itself. Preservers have a tendency to focus on getting their work done and doing it well and then expecting that other people will appreciate it, expecting that other people will notice how good they are. The reality is people won’t take the time to notice how good you are, you have to let them know. It’s not up to your boss, it’s not up to your co-workers, it’s not up to your customers to recognize how wonderful you are, it’s up to you to let them know. So, there are a couple of things specifically to remember and to work on. One is that presentation matters. How you present yourself, and how you present the work that you do should be focused on making the impression that you want to make. The second thing is it’s up to you to get the message out, it’s up to you to transmit, it’s up to you to let people know that you have certain capabilities that they need to know about. This doesn’t mean you have to be somebody who’s all focused on style and not delivering on substance; you have to do both. So, if you’re a preserver, don’t fall into your natural tendency to ignore the transmitting domain, let people know how good you are.
