Banish Your Magpie Syndrome: The Key to Staying Focused and Achieving More

Magpies love shiny things.

They like to fill their nest with lots of things that glitter.

As an executive coach, I often work with clients who have a magpie mind.

These clients have a strong tendency to collect ideas. One idea becomes another, and another, and another…

All too quickly, a client feels overwhelmed and anxious because their mind becomes cluttered with countless shiny ideas.

Together, we shift the habit of collection to focus on priority tasks and achieve productive best.

Today, I encourage you to make time to reflect on your past week.

Consider the ideas you have thought about and the frequency of them.

Next, ask yourself on a scale of 1:10 what has been the impact of the ideas you have gathered on your focus and productivity for the week. (1 being low and 10 being high)

For 5 and above, what do you think will happen if you continue collecting too many ideas?

To start to declutter your magpie mind, what will you do differently from Monday?

Do share your reflections in the comments below to help yourself and others reduce the volume of ideas and increase the opportunity of taking one step closer to achieving your personal best.
