Before she passed away, Emerson Hoogendoorn wanted other young cancer patients to know not to be afraid of the hospital. So she wrote a book, with help from friends.
HOLLAND, Mich. — Waukazoo Elementary School’s library was filled to capacity on Thursday night as dozens of people of all ages gathered for the chance to get their hands on one very special book.
For years, 13 ON YOUR SIDE has followed the journey of Emerson Hoogendoorn, also known as Emerson The Brave. Emerson passed away from cancer over the summer. But now her legacy lives on through a book she wrote before she died, “Emerson The Brave: My Cancer Journey From A-Z.”
“She had been writing this book for two years with her teacher, since fourth grade. It was an original school assignment,” said her grandmother, Barb Francis.
“But she asked Mrs. [Julie] Kovacs right of the start if she could make it into a real book. …
