Just thinking of it like David versus Goliath. These big corporations, a lot of ’em don’t have, thousands of dollars of ad spend, they have millions and in some cases billions, right? Billions is more rare, but a lot of ’em have millions, some even hundreds of millions of dollars. And how do you compete with them? SEO can continually get you traffic, it’s your 24 hour salesman, even when you’re sleeping, and when you get the results, a lot of it takes, it’s from time and effort versus money spent. And yes, it takes longer to achieve the results, but once you get them, it can really change your business overnight.The problem with social media is the algorithms change all the time, it can really hurt you, the reach is continuously dying unless you spend more and more money. with SEO you create amazing content, you get that evergreen traffic. With social media, you create content, you get that hit for the first 24, 48 hours, unless you produce another hit, you’re not going to see much love from social media unless you spend that money on advertising.For some trends in SEO for 2023, the first one is a lot of business owners focus on content, when it comes to SEO traffic, ’cause the more words you have, the better off you’re going to be. I’m assuming they’re high quality, pieces of content, sure. But the problem with content is there’s so much content on every single topic, it actually is harder to get rankings and traffic now than it was five, 10 years ago or even two years ago. You search for any term like auto insurance, there’ll be a billion plus results. But people are only clicking on the first 10, right? So no matter how many pieces of content you create, if you don’t have that many links, it’s going to be hard for you to also rank well. One way to generate the links is actually by releasing a free tool. So there’s free tools that you can pop on your website for any sector. You can figure out what it is, you can spend 10 to 50 bucks, they’ll give you a white label version that you can put on your website, claim it as your own ’cause you’re paying for it, and they allow this and you’ll notice that over time, it’ll produce a lot of natural links, which will help your rankings drastically.People tend to link to tools more than they link to content. So if you have great tools on your website, you’ll naturally get links. These links help your overall site rank higher, makes your tools rank higher, makes your homepage rank higher, makes your content pages rank higher because Google will look at the overall authority of your website. It has almost nothing to do with your website. In fact, this traffic hack relies completely on social media. Can you guess what it is? It’s use Instagram Stories. Instagram is still huge, with over 2 billion, not million, billion, monthly active users, and 59% of them who log in every day. So what should you be promoting on your Instagram Story in order to drive more traffic? One, I want you to promote a product. 36% of the Stories promote a product. It works. Now with this product, when you’re doing a Story, just don’t say, “Hey, here’s your product, swipe up to buy it.” You can have multiple Stories talking about the benefit of the product and how great it is, in essence, you’re making your pitch on Instagram, and then they swipe up to go to the the landing page. It’s called Apple. Apple does big product launches, they have live events, and they build up that anticipation. Stories can help you do that as well.Three, explainer videos. Users love tutorials. 5% of businesses use Instagram Stories for how-to videos. And these how-to videos help you build a bond with your audience, then they can swipe up, go to your website, read the rest of the blog post or watch the rest of the video, and that will help to drive you way more traffic. And we found it super effective for people to start becoming more loyal to your blog, becoming a reader, subscribing to it through email, or by just following you on any of the social networks out there.Four, new blog posts. If you’re blogging, you can’t just post on your website and hope for the best. Promote the heck out of it. I share my content on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, any social network out there, and I’ll even put in a new Story, “Check out this blog post, swipe up to read it,” and I’ll put something that’s catchy in the Story. So I may talk about, “Google’s about to release a new update. Swipe up to learn what it is and how to be prepared for it.” That’ll cause a lot of people to come to my website and learn more.Five, contests or sweepstakes. Want to really keep your audience engaged? Show off how they can win something exciting. Maybe a consultation, a free trial, or something exciting that you’re willing to give. Sweepstakes, giveaways, they’ve worked for ages, keep using them. That’s why when you go to a mall, you still see those giveaways of free cars. Or even you go to casino, they have all these giveaways. Why do they do that? Because it works.Six, user generated content. Look, UGC, or user generated content, is huge. 93% of marketers agree that content created by consumers perform better than branded content. I want you to focus on helping other creators’ audiences. You want to focus on their audience’s pain points, their needs, their wants, and you want to solve the problem in a way that no one else did. You want to turn a written piece of content into a data visualization piece. You want to turn a written content piece into a video. You have to figure out how to make it beneficial to the other audience. So for example, if you write more detailed content than your competition and someone’s linking to them, and there are articles on ‘how to get more Facebook to reach in 2021’ and they’re linked to it, they’re like, “Hey, this is how you’re going to improve your Facebook reach.” Well, if 2022s coming up and their algorithms change or 2023s coming up, or 2024s coming up and their algorithm change, then you can talk about their updated algorithms and each one, same with Google, and you can be like, “Look, here’s what’s working these days. Here’s the type of content pieces that are working. Here’s what’s not. Here’s the overview synopsis. Here’s even a video that gives you an overview.” And sending that to people who are linking to your competition, they’re more likely to link to you because that benefits their reader base and gives them the latest and greatest. Also, I don’t want you to use cold outreach templates. They just don’t work. Use your own voice, understand what works in your templates and adjust to your own personality, your own voice, et cetera. Promoting your own brand can be more powerful than also promoting your own content. So here’s an example of that. You’re probably like, “Neil, what are you talking about? Promoting your own brand versus your content?” Seeing content marketing, everyone’s like, “Oh, you got to promote your content.” Well, a lot of times I did self-like, I did a ‘who is Neil Patel campaign’. There was a ton of people who are popular all over the world on social media and they promoted my name.And just posting your content on social media these days, isn’t enough. You need to tease people and try to gauge their pain points. You need to lead with a teaser piece when you’re trying to post on social media and have that call to action so then that way people want to go to your website. So for example, when I post on social media, I’ll start with the hook, such as, “the way you’re promoting content is all wrong. Do you want to know how to do it the new way? Well, here’s the latest and greatest.” You see how I use the hook that causes people from social to be more likely to go to your website. And by telling people that, or even telling them to check out in-depth pieces on your website from your social channels, that can help a little bit, but it doesn’t work as well as that hook that I just mentioned. And you don’t want to waste time trying to get the wrong brands to promote your content. If there’s an audience mismatch, you’re going to be wasting time. You don’t want to focus only on the big brands, go after smaller brands that are in your space. Even niche people don’t have a big audience. Something’s better than nothing. You want to focus on external content promotion opportunities that make sense, that allow you to build your own community, that allow you to nurture your community with content that only they have access to. For example, I may do a partnership with Entrepreneur, do a webinar, tell people about all the latest and greatest on my site, have a landing page for them, tell them about it, collect their email address so that way I can foster, nurture my own community. SEO’s great, but before you really invest a lot into it, there’s something you should know. Today I’m going to break up advice every online business owner should hear before starting SEO. Look, SEO’s long-term. You need other traffic sources to make money before you succeed with SEO. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t start doing SEO right now because in the future, is one of the highest ROI marketing channels out there. But still you need to start doing stuff right now to generate those sales because you can’t wait six months, or a year, or two years depending on the keywords you’re going after to really get the results. First, you need to learn how to convert visitors into buyers. If you can’t convert visitors into buyers, then it doesn’t matter how much traffic you get. And if you can’t get your conversion rate high enough, the economics won’t work out, especially with paid advertising because the costs are continually rising, especially after COVID. You don’t really need a billion dollars for engineering when you’re a startup, but you do need it to scale your sales and marketing. And you need to have a conversion funnel with upsells and downsells. That’s how you get the most out of your revenue. The upsells and downsells, the key with that is speed and automation. And as long as you’re producing results, people gladly take you off those upsells and downsells. Second thing that you need to know. Search engines give older websites more authority and more placement. Now there’s no guarantee that if you’re older website, you have more authority in your website because you could be a brand new hot website that every wants a link to it talk about, but that’s usually not the case. Typically the older sites have much more authority. And no matter how much money you have, you can’t easily buy that age. You just have to be patient. And that’s the thing with SEO. It is super effective. The ROI is massive and that’s why we have one of the fastest 500 growing companies according to “E Magazine”, because SEO works for customers and our results are proven.Third don’t take short-term gains for long-term losses.So doing what’s best for your customers wins in the long run. Fourth, create a better mouse trap, as marketing is becoming too expensive. Look, I’m a marketer and I’m telling you, it’s just going to keep going up and up. So you’ve got to figure out a better mouse trap. And you can do some things that are very similar to sites like CodeCanyon that can help you put tools on your website, which can help you get traffic and you’d give away stuff for free, and you can buy some of these tools for 10, 20, 30, $40. They’re not going to be as good as what Zillow did or what I did, but it’s a start. And then over time you can invest more money to making it better.
