The biggest SEO mistake I’ve ever made. What does a national park, a war, and a casino all have in common? Well, I’ll give you a hint. It involved my biggest SEO mistake. I gave you that hint right? Now before I break down my SEO mistake, I want to first tell you that you need to think long term. See, I was shortsighted when I first got started into the role of entrepreneurship and marketing. When I was in my early twenties, and even before that, when I was 16, 17, 18, because I started SEO when I was around 16 years old. And to give you context, now I’m 37. I want to make money fast. So fast, I look for shortcuts. And there was this one site called Battlefield Bypass which was expired domain with a lot of authoritative links. These links were naturally generated and not purchased because it was a national park site. And it was part of the award that happened on that land. So I bought it, converted it into online casino site. Within months, I was ranking the top three positions on Google for the term “online casino”. That keyword is worth hundreds and thousands of dollars a month in affiliate revenue. Not thousands, hundreds of thousands to give you perspective. That’s millions of dollars a year. That’s a lot of money, especially when you’re under 20 years old. But within months, Google whacked me! All of a sudden that site lost all of its rankings. In essence, I was trying to cheat the system by getting traffic and rankings by cheating instead of providing value. See, the sites that rank in the top in the long run are the ones that users love the most. No one that cheats their way to the top lasts forever. Just think of it this way. You don’t really care if a site at the top has a lot of back links or better on page code. You only care if that site solves your problem and ideally in a quick and affordable fashion. Now I learned a lot from this mistake, and I made tones of others as well. But I had the shortcut mentality when I was young and I was growing up. And if I could go back in time I would stop taking shortcuts. And I would be much further in my career even as an entrepreneur. That’s my big SEO mistake. Just because a keyword gets a lot of traffic, it doesn’t mean it’s worth going after. Today I’m going to break down, how not every keyword is worth pursuing an SEO and why.RESOURCES & LINKS: ____________________________________________Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/____________________________________________Going after keywords that are too competitive is a waste of time, specially if you have a low domain authority. Look, if you’re going after keywords like credit cards and your brand new site, your chance of ranking are slim to none, you’re going to spend all this time and effort and money to try to get there, and you’re not going to get the results anytime soon. You’re better off going after keywords that can provide quicker results, and then once you’re getting some rankings, you’re generating some traffic, some revenue, then in the long run, you can invest after those harder terms that take longer to rank for. Before I dive in with the tactics, I’ve got a quick stop for you. I get over 9 million visitors a month, but less than .1%, not 1%, I’m saying .1% of those visitors, ever become a customer. High volume keywords don’t mean much to go after if they don’t have the correct intent.So how do you find out the right keywords to go after? Well, step one, go to Uber suggests. Step two, type in the keyword related to your industry. Step three, you’ll see a report that loads on Ubersuggest that just has overview on the traffic and some stars of the keyword. In the left hand navigation I want you to click on the keyword Ideas report. And when you click on the Keyword Ideas report, you’ll see a button on the very right called Keywords I Can Rank For. If you don’t see it, that means you need a log in. It’s free to log in. And once you log in, you can put in your domain name. And when you put it in your domain name, Ubersuggest will analyze your site and show you that an appropriate list of keywords that you can target, that you actually have a shot of ranking for and the shorter timeframe versus waiting years to get rankings for. Now filter the base on the intent of what is relevant to your proctor services that you’re selling. And what you’ll find is Ubersuggest will break down if a keyword is easy to rank for or hard to rank for. Ideally target the ones that are the easiest to rank for, because it’ll show as your difficulty score. Even though you have a list of all the keywords that you can rank for, pick the ones that are not just the most relevant to your business, but pick the ones that have the lowest SEO difficulty score. That means you’ll be able to get the results faster. That’s what I want you to start doing. Now the next thing I want you to do is that you go to the Site Audit Report within Ubersuggest. If you’re starting off with SEO, it’s not all about traffic, it’s all about ranking for the right keywords that drive a results in the short run so that you will have more money to invest in more long-term marketing approaches.With the Site Audit report, put in your URL, it’ll break down all the Errors, what you need to fix, what’s the most crucial, what is more suggested and isn’t as crucial, how fast your website’s loading, load speeds are really important factor because more people are browsing your website or pretty much the internet these days off of mobile devices than they are on desktop devices.And what’s cool with the Ubersuggest audit report is, it breaks out each and every single error in priority. What I mean by that is the ones listed at the top show you “hey, you need to fix these errors first because they’ll have the biggest impact on your rankings and track.” And then you second, third, fourth. So just knock them all down in order. The last thing I want you to do is go create a project within Ubersuggest. So go to your dashboard, add a project, put in your URL, and put in the keywords that you want to rank for, and that you’re targeting. You know, at the beginning, maybe not week over week or day over day, but in the long run, quarter over quarter, you’ll definitely see your rankings go up and if you fast forward a little bit, you’ll start seeing your rankings go up to page one and page two. Then what I want you to do is type in one of your competitor’s domains. If you don’t know a competitor, or who your competitor maybe, just think about what industry you’re in. And what do I want to do is break down, all right, how do I go out there and create really popular web pages really fast? Well, whenever you put in a competitor domain name into Ubersuggest, it tells you the roughly monthly traffic and their authority. And then I want you to click on Top Pages by Traffic. This breaks down, I got to put in Moz, not neilpatel.com. This breaks down the most popular web pages on their website. As you can see here, the beginner’s guide to SEO, what is SEO? Free tools, this is really cool. I can create a page on free tools, even if I don’t have free tools myself, what I could do I can link to other people’s tools in my space, maybe add affiliate links. Like, as you can see here, this isn’t really a big competing, or this isn’t really like a text-based heavy webpage. It’s just a page on free tools. And when I click here under View All, it’ll show me all the keywords they use to get that traffic. I can export it as well. So, I can just have that list. And now I know, all right, I should go and create an article on free SEO tools. And if I do that, I can actually point them to Ubersuggest, because there’s a free version of it. Like, you know, you don’t have to pay for it and then go from there. And I probably can generate more traffic. So, I can create articles based on, or web pages, based on what’s working for them. They have a free keyword tool. They have a guide to online ad types. I think that would be really useful and it probably doesn’t need to be as text rich, maybe there’s is, but I can create an article or infographic that just talk about the ad types, it’s a lot more images than texts, And I can tell people in there, hey, if you need help with your ad types, check out my ad agency, NP Digital. Now what’s cool about this report, and Uber sets the Top Pages by Traffic, anytime you put it in a quote unquote competitor domain name. You can see all the keywords that page ranks for. So, not only do you want to view the page, like I clicked to go view the page, I’m also here at the WordStream one. I can see all the keywords that they’re including to get that traffic from Google. And that gives me ideas on what keywords I need to include within my content. And you can just keep doing that and go next, next, next. And you can see all the keywords that they’re leveraging, which will help you not just create blog posts, but also web pages. So that way, you know what to focus on because you can see here, not all the popular pages on a site are blog posts, like this, one’s a blog, this one’s a blog, this one’s a blog and it keeps going. And if your business is not based in the United States, don’t worry. You can click on India for a competitor or Great Britain, and you could see who their most popular page is within that region and go through that formula all over again and replicate it. This strategy is super, super effective. I give this to my teams and that way, when we look at our competitors and we’re analyzing them, we focus on creating webpages that are superpopular on our competition versus just creating whatever we want. So then that way we are creating pages that generate traffic first and fast, because we already know that they work super well.
